is this report about what is ahead in terms of the gun control fight. we heard from the nra friday. let me read you a few sentences -- that was nearly 20 years ago in 1993. we will hear from that testimony in a couple of minutes. we want to get your calls and what is ahead in gun-control. roy is joining us from north carolina, the independent line, good morning. caller: it could be a bitter fight but i think some drastic action needs to be taken. it should be at least as burdensome for the gun owner as it is for a car owner. registration, insurance, testing, everything -- handguns are a big problem, too. i think it is so bad that the president should do some kind of executive order and put a moratorium on military rifles, at least, because around here in western north carolina, there are gun shops and people waiting for four hours to get to this ar-15. they say they will not take it out of the box, the majority of them. they will either have it as an investment or have it grandfathered in. this is like undetectable poison. 300 million guns that have proliferated the whole country. we have plent
on that banner says, nra killing our kids. this is the first news conference the nra held since the mass shooting that we first told you about last friday. wayne laperriere, ceo of nra. he will amid this first statement when the disruption took place. one of the big questions, moving forward into the new year, what will the task force created by president obama come up with, when it comes to the future potentially of gun control in this country. and how will the nra respond? according to some initial reports it seemed that the nra said they were going to come out with their own proposal and hopefully work in the process. let's go ahead and listen to wayne laperriere. >> by an unknown number of genuine monsters. people that are so deranged, so evil, so possessed by voices and driven by demons, that no sane person can ever possibly comprehend them. they walk among us every single day. and does anybody really belief that the next adam lanza isn't planning his attack on a school? he is already identified at this very moment? how many more copycats are waiting in the wings for their moment of fame? fr
correct and partially wrong. it looks like the nra's proposal is a lot like exactly what happened after 9/11. immediately though grabbed any federal agent they could to throw them on the planes and later on they put together a really poorly implemented program to arm pilots. and not very many volunteered for the program. i can see the reality. look. he is right in some regard. if someone shows up at a school and there is an armed principal and armed guard clearly that is not going to happen it's unseasonable for starters. it is impractical. let alone the safety implications that come out of all of this. did it work in the skies though? >> well, could argue that it is working because there hasn't been an incident but it looks like every time an american aircraft that gets hijacked there hasn't been any air marshals or both planes that have in iad's on board most of them didn't have armed marshals on them and i don't think there were any armed pilots on them either. so, the air marshall program alone is a billion-dollar program. and the armed pilots program is a lot of the pilots believe it

is the nra to deal with on these issues? i mean, talk about the power that the nra wields. >> look, i think actually the nra's power is more perceived than real, alex. when i heard the news yesterday and like jimmy, i grew up with a rifle. i grew up in pennsylvania. we went hunting. we never had handguns around but we had a rifle in the house. and we used it for hunting. that was it. but i think a lot of us who were in the hunting community have much more tolerance for stricter regulation of the handguns and especially certain kinds of handguns than most people per sooechlt and i think you see that in the polling. when i heard the news yesterday as a father of two children who i send out to public school here in washington, d.c. every day, a city that has outlawed guns but still has a very high crime rate, and the husband of a public schoolteacher, i just wanted to see my wife and two kids as quickly as possible and hug them and know that they're okay. like all other parents, i think, in the country, including the president felt when we heard the news yesterday. >> well, i can echo that. i

that will strike fear in the hearts of folks at the nra because they, when he was senator biden, gave him an "f" on his pro-gun rights policies and said in 2008, few in the senate have as much experience as biden in attacking our right to keep and bear arms. they will not like the choice. but it does appear they are now going to take a serious look at, what, another assault weapons ban? what do you think is likely to come out of this? >> what was interesting in the president's press conference he was actually fairly specific what he hopes to get out of this task force. he says, it was clear it wasn't a commission. i think people who are speculating the president is using this biden task force to sort of get out of having to do implement serious gun control measures or doing kinds of things the president suggested he would do in his speech in newtown on sunday night are just wrong. i think the president is still eager to move urgently and i think the picking of vice president biden suggests that but he was fairly specific. he talked about reinstating an assault weapons ban. the president talked
